Cables Operators vow to block child porn … and the rest of the internet .

Talk about a morality spin … Wow .

It would be virtually impossible for them not to agree to block child porn … but that’s not all this is about.

Sure, no one wants child porn. However Verizon (among others) is using this popular scare opportunity to drop tens of thousands of legitimate Alt Usenet newsgroups instead of just the 88 the NY State Attorney’s Office  identified as containing “Child Porn”. That was the isp’s real business reason behind embracing this measure. It frees up their servers and bandwidth and manpower.

While they are not physically blocking Usenet newgroups access they have stopped providing the access to the newsgroups which has had an identical effect.

I see this as being the the 2nd round to Comcast’s throttling bit torrent … but instead of trying to block bittorent using network management or piracy as an excuse  … they are using this child porn scare tactic to throttle all Usenet traffic (a large bandwidth usage for them)  … very clever of them … they will probably can’t get away with it too … or will they?
